Studying in Singapore: UNILINK's country brief

Updated:

Singapore stands as Asia’s most competitive and internationalised higher education hub. The country hosts two universities consistently ranked in the world’s top 15—the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. Beyond academic excellence, Singapore offers an exceptional quality of life, a multicultural environment, and a dynamic job market in finance, technology, and international business. For students seeking an Asian education with genuinely global reach, Singapore is unmatched.

Singapore’s draw rests on several foundations. The two flagship universities maintain world-class research profiles and attract exceptional academic talent. The island’s status as Asia’s financial centre creates unparalleled opportunities for internships and graduate employment in banking, investment management, and fintech. The multicultural environment—with Chinese, Malay, Indian, and expatriate communities—mirrors the globalised workplace. And living standards are excellent, with world-class healthcare, transport, and safety standards making daily life straightforward and pleasant.

Flagship Universities

National University of Singapore (NUS)

Ranked 13 in QS 2026. Consistently Asia’s leading university. Particular strengths in engineering, business, law, and medicine. Located on a spacious campus in western Singapore.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU)

Ranked 15 in QS 2026. Rapidly rising institution with exceptional strength in engineering and computer science. Modern campus in western Singapore with innovative facilities.

Both universities offer bachelor’s and master’s programmes across disciplines. NUS is slightly larger with more extensive research networks; NTU has gained prominence particularly in STEM fields. Both place graduates successfully into competitive global careers.

Other institutions

Singapore Management University (SMU), Singapore Institute of Technology, and other institutions offer more specialised or applied programmes. Whilst not in the global top tier, these institutions serve the local and regional job market effectively.

Entry Requirements

English language proficiency

Both NUS and NTU require IELTS 6.5 (no band lower than 6.0) or equivalent. TOEFL is accepted with equivalent scores. Some research programmes may demand higher thresholds.

Academic qualifications

Bachelor’s admission requires completion of secondary education with strong grades. Competitive candidates often have GPA above 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent. Postgraduate study requires an honours bachelor’s degree. Some master’s programmes are designed for career-changers with relevant work experience.

Standardised testing

Many programmes require standardised test scores. Graduate programmes often request GMAT (for business) or GRE (for engineering and sciences). Medical programmes may require MCAT or equivalent.

Financial evidence

Universities typically require evidence of funds sufficient to cover tuition and living costs throughout the study period, usually SGD 50,000–80,000 depending on programme.

Visa at a Glance

Student Pass

The standard permission to study in Singapore. Granted for the duration of study and permits part-time work within defined limits (typically 16 hours per week during term, unlimited during official breaks, subject to employer approval).

Visa cost and processing

The Student Pass is free to apply for. Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks from submission. Applications lodged by the university on behalf of the student are generally expedited.

Key considerations

Student Passes are tied to enrolment with a specific institution. Ensure you maintain full-time status and comply with all conditions. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) is efficient and generally transparent in its administration.

Tuition & Cost of Living

Tuition (2026 rates, SGD per annum)

Living costs (SGD per annum)

Total annual costs typically range from SGD 16,000–27,000, making Singapore competitive with other major destinations when scholarship support is factored in.

Scholarships

Both NUS and NTU offer merit-based scholarships to international students. Competition is significant, but substantial awards covering tuition and living expenses are available.

After Graduation

Employment Pass and work rights

Upon graduation, international students may apply for an Employment Pass if sponsored by a Singaporean employer. The requirement varies by qualification and salary offered, but typically ranges from SGD 3,600 monthly upwards. Upon securing employment and sponsorship, most graduates can remain in Singapore on successive visa renewals.

Graduate employment market

Singapore’s job market is highly competitive but offers exceptional opportunities. Multinational finance and technology companies actively recruit NUS and NTU graduates. Starting salaries for engineering and business graduates are strong. However, competition is intense, and degree prestige alone does not guarantee employment.

Pathways to residency

Singapore does not offer a direct pathway from student to permanent residency in the manner of Australia or New Zealand. However, skilled graduates who secure employment sponsorship and demonstrate value to employers can remain on successive work visas. Long-term residence (Permanent Residency) is possible but requires several years of skilled employment and is at the discretion of the government.

UNILINK maintains strong relationships with NUS, NTU, and other Singapore institutions. We guide you toward programmes aligned with your profile and career aspirations, assist with applications (which are competitive), provide information about the Singapore student experience, and outline realistic expectations for graduate employment. Our team understands the regulatory environment and can advise on visa requirements and post-study options.

Next Steps

Planning a Singapore application typically spans 6–12 months, as admission is competitive and application cycles are tightly scheduled. Early engagement maximises options. To explore Singapore as your study destination, complete our intake form or contact us via WeChat.
